Some Mineralogical and Gemological Properties of Silicified Wood Species in Western Anatolia

The silicified wood samples identified in Western Anatolia are located the Late Miocene-Pliocene aged Çokköy Formation Tavşanlı (Kütahya) and its surroundings, Osmancalı (Manisa) vicinity Early (?)-Middle Miocene Foça Tuff Banaz (Uşak) around Middle-Late Yeniköy within terrestrial sediments. formation of woods petrified by silicification mechanism is associated with sedimentation clastic sediments formed simultaneously Neogene period volcanic activities region. In mineralogical-petrographic examinations on three oriented thin sections, including transverse, radial tangential, chalcedony polymorphs silica less quartz opal were detected samples. Mineralogical interpretations also supported X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD) analysis. As a result paleobotanical definitions made sections botanical microscope; Taxodioxylon Hartig 1848 (Swamp cypress), Pinuxylon Gothan 1906 (Pine), Pterocaroxylon Müll.-Stoll et Mädel 1960 (Walnut), Quercoxylon (Kräusel 1939) Gros 1988 (evergreen oak), Glyptostroboxylon Conwentz 1884 cypress) fossil species identified. According to these findings, warmer more humid climate prevails than today, cypress forests edges swamps streams, pine evergreen oak slopes determined. Within scope gemological samples, which rich color/pattern selected, polished giving cabochon forms, then mounted silver. A small amount facet cutting studies carried out from unpatterned monochromatic Silicified have high values terms hardness, exhibit an unstable character due weak zones they contain do not show desired performance pattern/color.
